The PBCO promotes the appropriate use of blood and blood products in BC. The objectives are:

•Improved efficiency of blood and blood product use – in other words, doing things right. The ultimate objective is minimal waste of resources.
•Improved efficacy of blood and blood product use – in other words, doing the right thing, namely providing the right product in the right quantity to the right patient at the right time. The ultimate objective is improved patient outcomes.

The PBCO’s utilization management activities include:

•development of guidelines, policies, procedures and job aids for use by hospitals, physicians and other caregivers; 
•undertaking systematic reviews of the literature regarding blood and blood products;
•coordinating the redistribution of blood and blood products from low-use to high-use hospitals to reduce waste;
•establishing programs to manage use of specific blood products;
•advising the Ministry of Health and health authorities regarding blood policy.
