The Provincial Blood Coordinating Office (PBCO) operates the Central Transfusion Registry (CTR), which is a database containing records on recipients of blood and blood products in British Columbia and the Yukon together with details of the products transfused.

The CTR has been in operation since April 1, 1999. It was the first population-based transfusion registry in Canada, and remains one of the largest such registries in North America.

The CTR facilitates notification of transfusion recipients in B.C. and the Yukon in the event of a problem with a blood component or blood product. The CTR also supports transfusion medicine, utilization programs for red cell and fractionated products, quality and safety initiatives, surveillance tracking and a request module for IVIG product approval.

The CTR is a unique and innovative program in Canada and has proven to be an important tool to support utilization, management, planning, forecasting and decision making for the PBCO and its partners and stakeholders.
